MK vs DC Crispy Gamer Ed Boon Interview | Comments (11)
Video Game website Crispy Gamer has recently posted an interview with MK Vs DC Universe project lead Ed Boon. While the article repeats much of what we already know it does offer greater insight than previous interviews.
In the interview Ed Boon gives more details on the story-mode of MK Vs DC Universe and how the player will advance through it.
Boon: The way we took it with the story is at the same time two cataclysmic events -- we reveal it all in the game -- occur at the same moment in time in the two different dimensions and it causes a rift between them. So all of a sudden Batman is in Gotham City and he comes across Scorpion. How did that happen? Who is this character? Scorpion is like, "Where am I?" There is this slow mergence of the characters -- they start swapping places and whatnot -- and all of a sudden the realms start. You'll see an island that's half of Shang Tsung's island and half of something like this.
Crispy Gamer: Is it going to be like the Quest Mode when you evolve the character?
Boon: No, you play multiple characters in this one. So you spend Chapter One as Superman -- it's not literal -- Chapter Two might be Batman. Chapter One in Mortal Kombat is Scorpion -- you play as Scorpion and you learn his moves -- and in his story he meets up with Sub-Zero, and you continue the path as Sub-Zero. You follow a character for a certain amount of time.
Another part of the interview of particular interest is a comment by Ed Boon where he speculates including different 'rules' for when MK characters face up against one another.
Crispy Gamer: One of the staples of the Mortal Kombat franchise is fatalities. So with a Teen rating are you going to be able to rip Superman's heart out or rip Batman's spine out of his back?
Boon: . . . We're going to be making big outrageous events -- superpower events -- kind of annihilate the character. He's not necessarily dead. Maybe the Mortal Kombat characters will have different rules when they're fighting each other -- we're still toying with all these variables.

MK vs DC Videogamer Preview | Comments (10)
Videogamer.com have posted a new preview of Midway's latest installment of the Mortal Kombat franchise, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. While the majority of the preview doesn't contain anything entirely new, there are a few interesting snippets of information worth noting.
» Mortal Kombat series co-creator Ed Boon was well aware of the gore restrictions when going into the project, but intends on pushing the limits as far a he can within the Teen rating. He also emphasizes that while we won't be seeing Sub-Zero tearing off Batman's head, there will be blood and a finisher move that retains the brutal, intense spirit of the past Mortal Kombat games.
» There will be some sort of a tag team single-player mode which allows you to pick one Mortal Kombat character and one DC Universe character, and see the story/events unfold from both perspectives.
» At the moment they are aiming for 20 characters in the game; 10 from Mortal Kombat, and 10 from DC Universe. No new characters will be introduced in this game.

TRMK interview with Ed Boon | Comments (10)
Fellow Mortal Kombat fan site TRMK have posted an interview with the Mortal Kombat series co-creator Ed Boon which took place at the 2008 Midway Gamer's Day.
Patrick (TRMK): When did you come up with the concept, of Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. And how did everything get set up between the two companies?
Ed Boon (EB): You know what, literally around Mortal Kombat 3. I always thought it would be cool to see a crossover like Street Fighter versus Mortal Kombat. Then we started to get into 3D stuff like Deadly Alliance we started talking about doing some crossover stuff. Then the reality of the situation is who is going to develop it and who is going to have approval rights. A couple of times we were pretty close to pursuing some stuff, but our guy who was our representative on their side quit. So from that stand point the idea of a crossover has always kind of been in my head.
And our marketing people approached us and said “what do you think about doing a DC game?” And you know, there was obvious pause. We didn’t instantly say “Yeah we’ll do it!” But at the same time, we’re on Mortal Kombat 8 and we see the sales of other fighting games, and as big of a fan of them that I am, we see their sales going down and what-not. We’ve been lucky enough to have maintained that we’ve sold in the multi-million of copies of our games. We really feel like that it’s the big changes that we do that keep people interested.
You can read or stream audio of the entire interview over at TRMK. Thanks to tommystockley for the news lead!
